Our Country’s democratic principles, its love of liberty and freedom are inextricably interwoven into the art and architecture of the United States Capitol.
Constantino Brumidi was hired to paint in the Capitol during the mid-19th century extension project, which added the present House and Senate wings and the cast-iron dome. Brumidi?s classical training in Rome gave him a thorough understanding of Renaissance and Baroque styles, symbols, and techniques of wall painting. At the Capitol, he combined these classical elements with subjects from American history and technology.
